iCommons Summit 2008 report-3 keynote by Mohamed Nanabhay
Mohamed Nanabhay of Al Jazeera, the Head of New Media at the AlJazeera Network (based in Doha, Qatar) gave a speech entitled "The Commons in the Corporation : The challenge of raising awareness within media corporations".
For the media and information companies, everything is drastically changing.
Mohamed mentions some challenges that the media industry in facing- for example, because of the new platforms, TV stations are losing their audience.
Especially for the generation under 30 years of age (called MySpace generation), the way they use and share the media has drastically changed- they use PCs, game machines and cell phones.
Parents learn about the news once CNN broadcasts it, but children knows the news from other media before the parents.
Those generations consumes news from Google News, Facebook or podcast... and content creation has changed too- not only the journalists but the citizens takes photos with their camera-phones and make them online immediately which would then be available on multiple platforms. Contents get remixed easily too. There is a new cycle of contents... and that is why licenses are interesting.
How should the media deal with this situation?

Start small and create precedent
Prove Strategeic Value- Made videos available online on YouTube and gained 35 million views
